- Built to order or requiring configuration before shipment
Each of these adds a different kind of delay — sourcing time, verification and testing time, or manufacturing lead time — and they compound when a project needs multiple parts with different availability profiles.
## Verification takes real time, especially for critical parts
When a part is sourced from surplus or a secondary channel, a responsible supplier tests it before it ships — checking that it powers on correctly, that firmware or configuration matches what's expected, and that it hasn't been damaged in a way that isn't visible externally. Skipping this step is how buyers end up with a part that arrives "working" and fails within days of installation.

1. **Ask for a realistic estimate up front**, not just a shipping promise. A supplier who tells you "2–3 weeks, pending verification" is giving you more useful information than one who says "yes, we can get that" without qualification.
2. **Flag time-critical orders immediately.** If a part is needed before a specific date — a scheduled shutdown, a vessel departure — say so when you first reach out, not after the order is placed.
3. **Keep a list of known single-source or long-lead components** for your facility or vessel, so sourcing can start before the part actually fails.
4. **Ask about express or expedited options early**, since not every part has one, and knowing that in advance changes how you plan the rest of the schedule.
## The honest answer is usually better than the fast one
A supplier who gives a firm, honest lead-time estimate — even when it's longer than you'd like — is generally more useful to plan around than one who promises fast delivery and then can't hold to it.
